Vastu

The decision by University Grants Commission to introduce Vaastu as subject at degree/post graduate level, gives scope to unearth the unknown secrets of the ancient subject used by ancient Indian architects in building huge edifices standing and being preserved even today as monuments. We salute UGC. Unfortunately our great rationalists are at forefront to oppose.

Vaastu is a science of engineering of those days dealing with materials and land, method of construction, principles to be followed, and many other aspects of engineering and architecture. A scientist always takes from ancient writings that important matter and substance and some times ignore the adjectives and other poetic phrases. So also in Vaastu the useful and important matter shall be taken for the guidance and use in modern structures. Instead our rationalists want to reject lock, stock and barrel, which by itself is irrational. These rejecters of Vaastu heard a bit of superficial superstitious words about Vaastu and conclude that entire Vaastu is superstition and should be rejected in Toto. First they must read what is told in Vaastu, the standard works, and then come to a conclusion.

Vaastu is written by many ancient scholars under the names such as Maya Vaastu, Maanasara in 7 volumes, Viswakarma Vaastu, Brihat Samhita , Samarangana Sutradhara, Vaastu Ratnakara, etc. and some of them are available translated into English. The Vaastu is divided in to three main parts/groups dealing with 1. Griha Vaastu -towns,villages and buildings 2. Sayana Vaastu- Furniture, tools and utensils and 3. Yaana Vaastu- Vehicles and carts.

In Griha Vaastu it is dealt in detail as to how the town/village is to be designed, how much land to be taken for developing town/village, how the roads shall be laid, their directions, individual houses, courts, theatres, guesthouses, temples, palaces, armory, Administrative buildings, ministerial houses, court rooms etc. in the construction what size of brick or stone is to be used, what should be the size of rooms and for such rooms/halls what should be the height and thickness of walls, the ratio between them, how and what type of roof is to be laid, where the entrances shall be for different uses, what type of materials such as wood etc to be used, when the wood is to be cut, whether two types of wood can be joined for one purpose and so on so forth.

Sayana Vaastu deals with the furniture such as king's throne, cots, chairs, and tables, boxes for holding material, jewels, and clothes, and many other needed things of day to day by ordinary man, by king, by VIPs etc. Even in the furniture what are measurements for different purposes, what type of wood or metal shall be used, when the wood is to be cut, what type tree is to be selected, a tree with lot of bird nests to be avoided as there is a possibility of white ants eating tree inside, also an environmentalist point of view, and many other considerations.

Yaana Vaastu deals with chariots for king, war lords, carts for common man, farmer and their design, strength, materials to be used and all and sundry connected to their building.

While this all the matter the Vaastu contains, our rationalist without going through the standard books and with only hearsay of small bits of superstition, the great Indian rationalist wants to condemn the Vaastu calling it a mad dog. A foreigner is better at least he wants to read and see what is told in it and make a research and use what good is told in those ancient books.

One can condemn where Vaastu is wrongly interpreted or wrongly used. It cannot be called wise or rationalism if any body wants to throw everything into dustbin. To make it palatable to rationalists, first the name should be changed and an English word be given instead of Vaastu. If any body argues irrationally in the name of rationalism, the society throws such irrational rationalist into a dustbin and one should be wise enough not to encounter such situation.

IS VASTU A SCIENCE OR DOGMA?
Some people say that they do not believe in Vastu and hence they do not follow it. It does mean that they do not know what Vastu is and how helpful it is.

WHAT DOES VASTU MEAN?
Vastu means a livable place or the materials. Earth is source for all the materials including the materials for construction of a house such as timber, stone, sand, metals etc., And also vastu deals with chariots, vehicles, boats, cots, chairs, tables, cupboards and the like. The vastu sastra tells how these are to be made in what shapes and in what measurements. Vastu sastra includes Civil Engineering, Architecture, Arts and Crafts. A plan is needed prior to construction of a house. The Vastu sastra tells which should be where in the plan. When that is the case, no body can say that vastu is Dogma. It is meaningless to say that one doesn't follow vastu, may be in a different name the principles are followed.

IF VASTU IS A SCIENCE, HOW DIFFERENT ADVISES ARE COMING FORTH FROM DIFFERENT PUNDITS? AND IN SOME CASES CONTRADICTING?
For every science some standard books are there. So is the case with vastu. The fundamental principles of vastu are the same. However some pundits of the recent days with half-read or un-read knowledge are publicising their own writings as vastu sastra and creating confusion among the people.

WHICH ARE THE AUTHENTIC BOOKS?
Manasaram, Viswa karma prakasika, Brihat samhita, Samaranga sutradharam, Aparajita purtcha vastu vidya, Silpa ratna, Maya vastu, Viswa karma vastu etc., are the standard works on vastu.

ARE THERE COLLEGES THAT TEACH VAST SASTRA?
Telugu University of Hyderabad has courses on vastu such as Post graduate course on Jyothirvastu, Certificate Diploma courses in Astrology, Vastu course in M.A. Telugu University, basing on the standard works have published their text books and lessons for their students.

WHAT IS THE USE WITH VASTU?
The influence of five elements, Earth, Water, Air, Light and Space, is great on human life. Similarly they are equally important in house construction. The vastu sastra tells the criteria in selecting a plot of land, the comforts and connivances to be incorporated in the plan and what care to be taken and what should be avoided for comfortable and peaceful living. The shape of the plot, the nature of the soil, influence of environs, flow direction of water, area of the house, construction of rooms for healthy and peaceful living, fixing up the four directions to the house, the beauty of the house as well the retention of the beauty of the houses in the row, the main entrance, main gate of the compound wall etc., are the important factors that are guided by vastu principles. It also says the favourable directions of the house for different people.

IS IT CORRECT THAT PLOTS WITH SOUTH AND WEST ROADS ARE NOT GOOD?
In any village or town roads and houses will be there in all four directions. All are good. No standard work on vastu did say that south and west roads to a plot are bad. The pseudo vast pundits created that myth. Even with common sense that village or town will have beauty when houses are there in all the four directions. The standard works say as to how a house is to be built according to its directions. In this science directions and corners have great importance and if they are wanted it is called `DIGMOODHAM' and is a `DOSHA' a defect.

WHAT IS DIGMOODHAM - HOW A PLOT WILL BE LACKING DIRECTION?
If we see with compass from the middle of a plot of land, four directions shall be to the four sides of the plot. The roads should not run to the four corner directions (Eesanyam- North-East, Aagneyam -South-East, Neiruti - South - West, Vayuvyam North-West). If roads run through corner directions the four directions south, north, east, west will be towards the corners of the plot. The plot of the land shall be square or rectangle and it should not be triangular, circular and other such odd shapes. If the corners of the plot extends it is bad.

IS IT CORRECT THE SAYING THAT EXTENDING OF NORTH-EAST IS ADVANTAGEOUS?
It is wrong to say that extending corner of North-East is good. This is also a creation of pseudo vastu pundits. If North-East extends the plot will be out of shape. What is told is that North-East extending by the size of a blackgram is auspicious. No corner should extend to make the plot out of shape.

SHOULD WE CONSTRUCT A HOUSE IN A PLOT WITH EXTENDED CORNERS?
No. It should not be constructed. If the plot is extended in corners such part of the plot shall be left out so as to make the plot square or rectangle before constructing a house. Such leftout areas shall be separate from the main house and they may be used for developing gardens, servant quarters or car garages.

IF THE ROADS RUN ON THE CORNER DIRECTIONS OF THE PLOT, WHAT SHOULD BE DONE?
If the row beauty of the houses in the road are maintained it looks nice. In these plots East, West, South, North directions will be to the corners of the plot. In such cases while maintaining the row beauty the main entrance (Simhadwara) shall be ensured facing to any one of the directions, but shall not face to a corner direction (north-east, south-east, south-west, north-west). Ensuring the main entrance to any one of the directions, plan should be prepared in 'L' shape. Two such L shaped houses or one L shaped house shall be constructed. In plots, where roads run along the corner directions, it is difficult to divide the plot as per the Vastu Padas.

WHAT IS VASTU PADA?
The length and width of the plot where you want to construct the house shall be divided into nine parts, and by drawing lines at those points will create 9x9=81 small squares or rectangles. These 81 squares or rectangles are called Vastu Padas. It is also called 'Ekaseeti' pada Vastu.

Vastu Pada

WHY VASTU PADA DIVISION SHOULD BE DONE?
Vastu Pada division is essential. By doing this division the following are the advantages:

1. We can arrive at the center pada (BrahmaSthana), of the plot.
2.Four directions South, East, North, West can be fixed with reference to the site.
3. It becomes easy to arrive at as to where Simhadwara shall be fixed.
4. It is easy to arrive at the open spaces to be left. All around equal to one Pada shall be left open i.e. 32 Padas plot shall be left open all around the house to be constructed.
5. It becomes easy to locate the points of Marma, Upamarma, Mahamarma in the plot. The horizontal, vertical lines and diagonal of the plot will join at some points, and these points are known as Marmasthanas. If these vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines are drawn on a paper it becomes east for identifying these points of Marmasthanas. In these Marmasthanas entrances, windows, beams and pillars shall not be erected. If erected the owner of the house will face many difficulties.

IS IT CORRECT TO SAY THAT COMPOUND WALL SHALL NOT BE CONSTRUCTED PRIOR TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOUSE?
It is a wrong notion. The compound wall shall be constructed before hand, and then only the construction of the house shall be taken up. By doing so, the bad influence of environment will not fall on the house construction, as per standard works on vastu.

WHAT TYPE OF ENVIRONS WILL BADLY INFLUENCE?
Water tanks, wells and pits on southern, south-western, and western sides, elevated area, hillocks or mounds on eastern, north-eastern, and northern sides shall not be there. No burial ground, temple, slaughter house, pollution shall be in the close proximity of the proposed house. These types of environs will have bad influence on the proposed construction.

WHICH SHOULD BE THE DIRECTION FOR ENTERING INTO THE HOUSE?
From the compound wall gate as you enter shall go straight to the main entrance or you can enter into the main entrance located on the right side of the house. This is known as Savyagamanam (clock-wise direction). It is not correct to enter in Apasavya gamanam (anti-clock- wise direction) or from the back side of the house. If on the back side of the house also a road runs, and an entrance is provided then you can enter from the back side of the house also.

CAN SIMHADWARA-MAIN ENTRANCE BE FIXED EXACT OPPOSITE TO THE COMPOUND WALL GATE?
Yes. It shall be like that only. However the center point of compound wall gate and center point of simhadwara shall not be on a perpendicular line. The center point of simhadwara shall be slightly towards the right side of the house.

BASING ON THE ROAD DIRECTION, IN WHICH DIRECTION SIMHADWARA OR MAIN ENTRANCE SHALL BE FIXED?
1. If road is on eastern side, simhadwara or main entrance shall be to the east or south but should not be to the north. 2. If road is on southern side, simhadwara shall be fixed to the south or west but not to the east. 3. If road is on western side the simhadwara shall be to the west or north but not to the south. 4. If road is on northern side the simhadwara shall be to the north or east, but not to the west. If Simhadwara are located as above the entry will be savyagamanam (clock-wise).

IS IT CORRECT TO SAY THAT THE THICKNESS AND THE HEIGHT OF THE WALLS ON NORTHERN, NORTH-EASTERN AND EASTERN SIDE SHALL BE LESS THAN THE OTHER SIDES?
If house is constructed as above it is against the rules of vastu sastra. In all directions the height and thickness of the walls shall be uniform. The present day pseudo vastu pundits are advising that north-east shall be lighter and south-west shall be heavier, which is against the basic principles of vastu. Such pundits are wrongly advising to construct the walls thicker and higher on the south western side. By doing so the strength of the house gets reduced and the defect will cause suffering to the owner.

SHOULD THE STAIR CASE NOT BE ON THE NORTH-EASTERN DIRECTION?
If anybody advises that the steps and stair case should not be on the north-eastern side, it is their own opinion but not the vastu rule. This is also a wrong advise of pseudo pundits. Vastu rules does not restrict the location of stair case.

SHOULD THE STAIR CASE BE LOCATED SO AS TO CLIMBUP ON SOUTH AND WEST DIRECTIONS AND CLIMB DOWN TOWARDS NORTH AND EAST?
This advise is also of modern pseudo pundits and hence need not be followed. Which ever direction is convenient that can be chosen for stair case. However such construction shall not be odd in the appearance and inconvenient to the people living there.

IS IT CORRECT TO CONSTRUCT A HOUSE ON TO THE SOUTHERN COMPOUND WALL WITHOUT LEAVING ANY OPEN SPACE ON SOUTHERN SIDE?
It is a major defect. If the house constructed without leaving open space on southern side or on south-west or on western side, as being advised by modern pundits, it becomes a major defect (dosha) as per vastu rules.

WALKING INTO HOUSE FROM SOUTHEAST AND SOUTHWEST TOWARDS NORTHEAST IS BEING TOLD AS GOOD. IS IT CORRECT?
This is also against vastu sastra. As already told the main entrance (simhadwara) should not be to the corner directions. This is one of the wrong advises being given by modern vastu pundits. The Main entrance- simhadwara shall be located at the place as per the vastupada division. If the plot is having south road the main entrance on south-east makes the entry anti clockwise (apasavya).

WHERE THE MAIN ENTRANCE-SIMHADWARA SHALL BE?
Basing on the directions with reference to vastu pada map the main entrance-simhadwara shall be fixed. a. If on northern side road, as you count from northwest to northeast the main simhadwara shall be fixed on 3-4 parts. b. If road on eastern side, as you count from northeast to south east the simhadwara shall be fixed 3-4 parts or division. c. For southern side road, as you count from southeast to southwest simhadwara shall be fixed on 4-6th parts. d. For western road as you count from southwest to northwest on 3-4th parts the simhadwara shall be fixed. as per MAYA vastu on all sides the simhadwara shall be fixed on 4th part from the corner. These are called Bhallata, Indra, Grihakshata, and Pushpadanta padas (parts). These are in the order of north, east, south and west roads for fixing simhadwaras.

CAN THERE BE TO SIMHADWARAS ON ANY ONE SIDE?
As told earlier on any side there should be one simhadwara fixed as per pada vastu. The second entrance will be known as UPADWARA or Secondary entrance. These UPADWARA can be fixed in 26-32 parts of northern side, 2 and 7 parts of eastern side,10 and 15 parts of southern side, 18 and 23 parts of western side, as shown in the vastupada map.

CAN THERE BE FOUR ENTRANCES ON ALL THE FOUR SIDES?
Having one entrance on each side of four sides of the house is excellent as par vastu sastra. On the main road side main entrance-simhadwara and on the back side upadwara-secondary entrance is advisable.

WHAT RULES ARE TO BE OBSERVED FOR FIXING SIMHADWARA?
1. The Simhadwara shall be to the side of main road and shall not be to the corner. 2. Opposite to simhadwara there should not be a pole or a tree or a well or staircase or hillock or a temple or a boulder or a canal. 3. The simhadwara shall be at a higher level than that of compound gate and shall be less width than that of compound gate. 4. The main simhadwara shall be at higher level so that it doesn't allow the flow of water form compound into the house. 5. The simhadwara shall be bigger in size than the other doors of the house.

SHOULD EVERY ENTRANCE BE OPPOSITE TO ANOTHER ENTRANCE?
As per vastu entrances should not be opposite to one another except simhadwara and the back entrance.

WHETHER ANY WOOD CAN BE USED FOR DOORS?
Teak, Sal, Neem, Mango, Yegisa are advisable for preparing the doors. However it is advised same variety shall be used in the crafting of a door. However in case of non availability two varieties can be used. Using more than two varieties is bad. The doors shall be so crafted and fixed that will not make noise on closing and opening and also there should not open and close on their own. That does mean the doors shall be so fixed that can be opened and closed properly. The height and width shall be in 9:5 ratio. Similar rules apply to windows also.

SHOULD THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DOORS BE AN EVEN NUMBER?
Doors, Windows, Beams, Pillars independently shall be in even number but at the same time should not be 10-20-30 etc.

SHALL THE VARANDAS BE INEVITABLE AND IF SO HOW MANY SHALL BE THERE?
Varandas are good and if possible on all four sides is advisable. If only one Verandah to be constructed or erected it is advised that it should be on front side of the house. If two are to be erected then there should be on front and back side or left and right sides. It is not advised one on to the front side and other on right or left side. If three Verandahs are to be erected in that case front, back and to the right side. It is good if two varandas are there in the front side.

HOW THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE ROOMS SHALL BE IN THE HOUSE?
The width and length of the plot in which the house is proposed to be built shall be divided in to nine parts on both the sides. One part all around shall be left open. If the length is divided into three parts the first part towards the main road where simhadwara-main entrance is being fixed, is known as DEVABHAGA. The back side one third part is known as MANUSHABHAGA. And the middle part is known as GANDHRAVABHAGA. In the first part i.e. Devabhaga, Prayer room, drawing room, and the discussion room can be arranged. In the back side MANUSHABHAGA kitchen, dining hall can be arranged. And the middle portion GANDHRAVABHAGA is meant for living room, bedroom and study room etc. Accordingly the rooms can be fixed in the house plan.

SHOULD THE KITCHEN BE ON SOUTHEAST SIDE ONLY?
There is no vastu rules that the kitchen should be on southeastern side of the house only.If the road is in west or in north then kitchen can be fixed on southeast. If the road is on eastern side or southern side and if the kitchen is fixed on southeast then it falls in the Devabhaga and vastu restricts the location of kitchen to the MANUSHABHAGA and hence kitchen on southeast for the eastern and southern road is wrong.

WHERE THE STOVE IS TO BE PLACED IN KITCHEN?
Where ever you arrange the kitchen, with in the kitchen you must place the stove in such away that you stand facing east while cooking the food. So inside the kitchen you place the stove on southeast corner and a sink on northeast corner so that the water flows out from that corner.

WHERE THE PRAYER ROOM SHOULD BE?
If simhadwara is on east or north it is possible to have a prayer room in northeast corner, the DEVABHAGA. For other Simhadwara positions you can have a prayer room in any corner but arrange in such a way that you sit facing east and pray the God. Some people are giving the wrong advice that the God's Photo face the east and your sitting facing west.

IS IT NOT CORRECT THAT IN TEMPLES THE GOD'S IDOL IS ARRANGED IN SUCH A WAY FACING EAST?
In temples the AGAMASASTRA is deciding as to which direction the idol should face. The house is not a temple but the temple is house of God. And for temples you should not use GRIHAVASTU but it should be according to AGAMA SASTRA.

IS IT CORRECT TO SAY THAT, BECAUSE NO WEIGHT SHOULD BE ON EAST AND NORTHEAST DIRECTIONS, NO PEDESTAL BE ERECTED FOR SEATING THE GOD'S IDOL OR PHOTO ON EAST OR NORTHEAST DIRECTIONS?
It is a wrong notion to say that no weight be there on east and northeast directions. It is well in practice that in front side of a house be it east or northeast to have elevated platforms where the family members sit and chitchat. So there is nothing wrong in erecting small pedestal/platform on east or northeast for placing the God's Idol.

SHOULD THE HOUSE OWNER'S BEDROOM BE ON SOUTHWEST SIDE ONLY?
The living and bedroom shall be in the middle part of DEVA-GANDHARVA-MANUSHABHAGA. So it is not correct that in every house the bedroom shall be located on southwest. In the normal course one can have bedroom on southern side, in the middle part living hall, bedrooms and children study room can be located.

SHOULD YOU NOT SLEEP WITH YOUR HEAD IN THE NORTH?
Yes it is correct that you could not sleep with your head on northern side. And also when you sleep opposite to your eyes there should not be any thing that stands as an obstruction. You can sleep with your head in the other three directions.

HOW MUCH THE THICKNESS AND HEIGHT OF THE WALLS BE ?
In the house in all the rooms the thickness and height shall be uniform excepting where slanting roof is provided. It is against the vastu rules the sayings of some of the modern pseudo pundits that the thickness and height of the walls on south and west shall be more than what is on east and north. One should take every care that from foundations the levels are uniform and they run in straight line without bends and perpendicular to the earth. It is a defect and dosha to have the walls not perpendicular, uneven and irregular.

WOW THE UPPER FLOORS ARE TO BE CONSTRUCTED?
In the ground floor whereever the doors and windows are, in the upper floors also there should be located at the same places. However the changes can be made in such a way that windows can be located in upper floor corresponding to doors in the lower floor or vice- versa. It is advised to have the kitchen, dining room and other rooms are located in the same way as in the ground floor with the same measurements and sizes. The height of the walls in the floor shall be less by one twelfth of the height of lower floor walls. This applies for every upper floor.

WHAT SHALL BE DONE IF UNDULATIONS ARE IN THE PLOT?
Before construction the plot of land shall be got evenly leveled to the extent of area of construction. If in the rest of compound area if not even, south and west can be slightly higher level and north and east shall be slightly lower level. The vice-versa is not advisable. In such cases the land is to be leveled. The variation in the level shall not be too much to make an odd appearance. The level difference is only for flow of rainwater.

HOW THE SLOPING DOWN SHALL BE FOR WATER FLOW?
In side the compound wall the water shall flow towards east, north and northeast. How ever the is possible only for plot with east or north road. For plots with road on west or south they must arrange drain pipes such that the flow is towards southeast or northwest and should not be southwest. well, water tank, and a bore well shall be on east, north or northeast of the plot. When it is not possible they can be located on north-northwest, or east-southeast. Under no circumstances it should be on south-southwest and if so then it is a major defect.

WHERE THE OVERHEAD WATER TANK SHALL BE LOCATED?
In the first floor or topmost floor the water shall be located on northwest side. It should not be on southwest. It is very wrong if any body advises to lower the roof level so that a water tank can be located on northeast.

IF A SEPTIC TANK IS NEEDED WHERE IT SHOULD BE LOCATED?
A septic can be provided on northern side, north- northwest, east, east-southeast sides. It should not be on southern side, southwest and west.

WHAT IS VEEDHI SOOLA?
Veedhi soola is a major defect-DOSHA. Veedhi soola means that a house with a road running along side front compound and another road cutting perpendicular making a 'T' junction any where on to the compound wall. In some cases when a person walk on a road he may see a house straight opposite to the road and the vision of some people may have bad influence on the house so located with VEEDHI SOOLA. As a remedy to this a small idol of lord Ganesha if fixed on to the compound wall at the point of such 'T' junction, the attention and vision of the passers by will fall on the Ganesh idol than on the house thus reducing the bad impact of VEEDHI SOOLA. Some people construct a small round house in side the compound at the point of 'T' Junction to distract the attention of the passer by from the main house to remedy the VEEDHI SOOLA defect.

WHAT IS THIS ROUND HOUSE OR CHUTTILLU?
With a diameter of nine or twelve feet a house in circular shape to be constructed on southern side is known as a round house remedy. It should not be more then twelve feet in diameter. A round house remedies mini vastu defects. Depending on the direction in which it is built, it can be used as kitchen, store room, guest room or watchmen room.

CAN EXTENSIONS BE MADE TO AN EXISTING HOUSE?
Generally if a house is built as per vastu with measurements suited to the owner, any extension will change the dimensions and the area unsuited to the owner. Any extensions made for an existing house shall not encroach into the all-round open spaces to be left at one ninth of width or length of the plot. After so living the open spaces the area in the middle is meant for building a house and that area is GARBHA PRAMANA and with out altering the GARBHA PRAMANA extentions can be made.

IN ONE COMPOUND CAN MORE NUMBER OF HOUSES BE BUILT?
In a large compound number of houses can be built. However certain rules or to be followed. In the first instance houses are to be built on southern and western sides. further constructions can be made on the northern side and eastern side. The vise-versa is not advisable. If houses to be built on south and west, the construction first to started on south then on west.

WHETHER SIMHADWARAS CAN BE OPPOSITE TO ONE ANOTHER WHEN MORE THAN ONE HOUSE CONSTRUCTED?
When two the houses are constructed in the same compound on north and south or east and west, the Simhadwaras-Main entrance shall not be opposite to one another. If the distance between the houses is more then double of the height of Simhadwara it may not be a defect. In the same compound two houses with west facing simhadwaras shall not be constructed.

CAN TWO HOUSES WITH A COMMON WALL IN THE MIDDLE BE BUILT?
Building two houses with a common wall in the middle is not correct. It is a major defect because it does not satisfy the open space all around and the roof of two houses should not join and should be separate. When more then two houses are constructed it will not be a defect as it becomes a cluster or complex. When two houses are constructed and one of the house is having a common wall on south or one of the houses is having Simhadwara on southern side it is a major defect. Some people are advising that building a house without open space on southwest is good. But as per vastu rules it is a major defect and homophile.

HOW MANY SIMHADWARAS CAN BE THERE FOR A HOUSE?
One two or four entrances can be there and of them simhadwara-Main entrance shall be one. For a house there should not be three entrances from out side. 1.The Simhadwara on east with a verandah in the front is known as DHANYA SALA or PADAMAT ILLU- West house. 2.The Simhadwara on south with front verandah is known as MAYA SAL or UTTARAPU ILLU- North house. 3.The Simhadwara on west with a front verandah is known as a KHARA SALA. 4.The Simhadwara on north with a front is known as DURMUKA SALA. For a house having one Simhadwara on west or on north without second entrance is harmful. Having only one outside entrance simhadwara on east and south are good.

IF TWO SIMHADWARAS ARE TO BE ERECTED IN WHICH DIRECTION THERE SHOULD BE?
 1.  One Simhadwara on east and another on  south can be had and it  is known as NANDA SALA which is good.
 2.  With Simhadwara on east and west the house is known as SANTA  SALA which is better.
 3. A house  with two Simhadwaras one on east and the other on north is  defective  and harmful and is known as KRURA SALA  if anybody  advises  this type of entrance it against vastu rules.
 4.  A  house with two Simhadwaras one on south and other on  north  is  good. If such a house is having verandah it is known as SUPAKSHA  SALA   which is further good.
 5.  If a house has one Simhadwara on south and the other on west  with  verandahs is known as MANORMA SALA which is also good.
 6.  A  house  with a simhadwara on west and the other  on  north  with  verandahs also it known as KSHAYA SALA which is bad and harmful
7.If  a  house having  Simhadwaras on all four sides it  is  known  as  VIJAYA SALA  which is  very good.

WHETHER A HOUSE CAN HAVE THERE SIMHADWARAS WITH VERANDAHS?
1.In certain directions it can be had.  The PRADHANA SIMHADWARA  shall  be  on  east the other two shall be on south and west it is  known  as  SUMUKHA SALA.
2.The PRADHANA SIMHADWARAS on east with a verandahs, and the other two   on south and north with verandahs, the house is known as DHANADA  SALA  which is also good.
 3. The PRADHANA SIMHADWARA  on east with a verandah, and other two  on  north  and  west  with verandahs the house is known  as  AKRANDA  SALA   which is bad and harm full.
4.The  PRADHANA SIMHADWARA on south with a verandah and the other  two  on  north  and west with varandahs, the house is know as  VIPULA  SALA  which is safe.

WHETHER TWO VARANDAHS CAN BE THERE ON PRADHANA SIMHADWARA SIDE?
DHANYA, NANDA, SANTHA, SUMUKHA, DHANAHA, and VIJAYA SALA types of house can have two front varandahs. They are respectively called RAMYA, SRIDHARA MUDITHA, VARDHAMANA, SUNABHA, SAMURADHA SALAS. If two varandahs are arranged for KRURA, AKRANDA SALAS it is much worse and or known as KARALA,and DWANKSHA SALAS.

CAN ENTRENCES BE THERE WITHOUT DOOR SHUTTERS ?
According to convenience it can be arranged with out shutters or door frames but in such case the top of the opening shall be in arch shape with windows to its side.

WHICH DIRECTION IS FAVOURABLE TO THE HOUSE OWNER?
The first letter of the house owners name shall be taken and arrive at the direction for the VARG that letter belongs to. ''AA-KA-CHA-TA- THA-PA-YA-SA'' are eight VARG (divisions) and all the letters divided into these eight VARGS as per the phonetics. 'AA' - varg consists "A-AA-I-IEE-U-RU-E-EI-O-OU" if the first the letter of this name falls in this catagory an east house with Simhadwara on west is favourable. 'KA'-varg consists of "K-KHA-GA-GHA-GNA" and these letters relate to southeast direction. The people with their first letter of the name falls in this category, a south house with north simhadwara is favourable. 'CHA'varg consists of "CHA-CHHA-JA-JHA-IGNA" and if the first letter of owners name falls in this catagory their direction is south and for them a house with north Simhadwara is favourable. 'TA' varg consists of "TA-TTA-DA-DDA-NNA" and if the first letter of owners name falls in this category their direction is southwest and for them a house with east Simhadwara is favourable. 'THA' varg consists of "THA-TTHA-DHA-DDHA-NA" and if the first letter of owners name falls in this category their direction is west and a house with east Simhadwara is favourable. 'PA' varg consists of "PA-PHA-BA-BHA-MA" and if the first letter of owners name falls in this category their direction northwest and a house with south Simhadwara is favourable. 'YA' varg consists of "YA-A-LA-VA" and if the first letter of owners name falls in this category and their direction is north and a house with south Simhadwara is favourable.
